Meet the Personatypes

Personatypes is a framework to help teams think more deeply about disability in design. Each one highlights real patterns in how people interact with digital products and systems, so you can spot barriers early and design with care.

  • The Adaptive Rebuilder
    The Adaptive Rebuilder

Adapting to disability over time. Experiences may include changing identity, processing loss and / or developing new strategies. Often navigating both internal resistance and external barriers.

  • The Energy Manager
    The Energy Manager

Designs engagement around capacity and energy. This user manages fluctuating or consistently low energy and seeks systems that respect their physical, emotional or cognitive bandwidth.

  • The Gentle Observer
    The Gentle Observer

Doesn't often identify as disabled but is attuned to exclusion. Offers early signals of barriers and often advocates for change even if indirectly impacted.

  • The Internal Adapter
    The Internal Adapter

Often new to disability or still processing it privately. May avoid disclosure due to fear, internalized ableism or lack of awareness. Not likely to request support or accommodation and blames self for access challenges.

  • The Lifelong Expert
    The Lifelong Expert

Deeply experienced with accessibility systems and assistive technology. Often more proficient than designers or developers and frustrated by systems that ignore expected conventions.

  • The Misread Signal
    The Misread Signal

Has an apparent disability that doesn't align with common disability stereotypes, leading others to make incorrect assumptions or overlook their actual needs. Often encounters irrelevant support from systems designed around more familiar patterns.

  • The Sensitive Navigator
    The Sensitive Navigator

Sensitive to emotional, sensory or psychological risks. May disengage quickly if systems feel coercive, ambiguous or overwhelming. Needs experiences that offer clarity, control and exit points.

  • The Steady Processor
    The Steady Processor

Prefers clear, consistent and supportive experiences that allow them to move at their own pace, building confidence through structure, repetition and positive feedback.

  • The Systems Thinker
    The Systems Thinker

Views access issues as a systemic mismatch. Brings structural insight and often advocates for broader change frequently at personal cost.

  • The Temporary Adapter
    The Temporary Adapter

Needs immediate usability without long-term adaptation. Their disability is apparent which affects social response and assumptions. Struggle with mismatch between clear needs yet lack knowledge of tools and features to help.
